Low tide on hayling sand bar in gusty NW winds
Kitesurfer known as Shakey who normally sails at Eastney was on Hayling to complete some logged hours with my school as he had recently qualified as and instructor. he has been kitesurfing for approx 4 years so had a reasonable level of experience
He attempted a kite loop but the water was very shallow as the board dug in just before takeoff it hit the seabed and came off his feet, at this point he lost control of the maneuver and landed fast on his side dislocating his shoulder, he was then lofted again and landed hard on his feet badly bruising his heals.
He was now lying on the sand bank unable to move, a couple of regular kiter's SA Julian and another went to his aid called the lifeboat. Unfortunately they were now on the sand bar with the tide coming in with a casualty who could not move getting cold. Julian who is a doctor who has worked in A&E popped his shoulder back in on the 2nd attempt so they could swim him back to the beach.
The lifeboat, ambulance, first responders and coastguard attended and and very shakey Shakey was taken off to hospital
He arrived at the shop today with arm in sling and bruised heels, he has done some damage to a bone on his shoulder which will take some time to heal but is OK

What can we learn from this accident
Offshore winds are very gusty and unpredictable
If you are not a regular sailor at a location it is worth asking the locals if it is going to be safe to go out
Especially if they are standing on the beach watching there is usually a good reason for that
Make sure the water is deep enough for the maneuver you are attempting
If you are at a new location play it safe until you are much more familiar with it
Plus points
Shakey was sailing in the correct area of the beach where there is plenty of space If this sort of thing had happened in front of the sea defenses it could have been a lot more serious
He was not sailing alone if he was it could have been allot longer for any help to reach him
Another thing worth considering, if you do seriously hurt yourself on the sand bar it is too shallow for the lifeboat to reach you so its going to be a helicopter
